Hawaiian plumeria is known for its sweet and fragrant aroma. The flower's scent is often described as being a combination of sweet and fruity, with hints of jasmine, orange blossom, and rose. The fragrance is usually strongest in the evening and early morning, making it a popular choice for use in Hawaiian lei and perfumes.
The plant was brought to Hawaii by early Polynesian settlers, who used it in traditional lei making and religious ceremonies. Over time, the plumeria became a symbol of Hawaiian culture used in for various ceremonial occasions as a gesture of affection and transition.
According to Hawaiian legend, the plumeria flower is associated with the goddess of fertility Laka and her leis, made of fragrant plumeria blooms, held the power to soothe and heal the hearts of all who saw it. The lei was said to be so powerful that even the gods would come down to earth just to bask in its beauty and fragrance. Whenever someone was feeling sad or ill, Laka would appear to them and place her lei around their neck. The person would immediately feel a sense of peace and happiness, and their pain would be eased. From that day forward, the plumeria flower became a symbol of love, healing, and hope in Hawaiian culture.
